Berlin-based pianist Nils Frahm is already a firebrand in the modern classical world, collaborating with contemporaries such as Peter Broderick, Ólafur Arnalds and Anne Müller. His unconventional approach to an age-old instrument, played contemplatively and intimately, has won him many fans around the world.

As announced by Drowned In Sound, he finally returns on October 10th 2011 with the successor to his highly acclaimed solo piano works Wintermusik and The Bells. Released on Erased Tapes Records and entitled FELT, the album will coincide with a European tour in November 2011 – a truly memorable and magical live experience.

.... Having recorded his last album live in a large, reverberant church, Nils Frahm now invites you to put on your headphones and dive into a world of microscopic and delicate sounds – so intimate that you could be sitting beside him.

Recorded late at night in the reflective solitude and silence of his studio in Berlin, Frahm uncovers a new sound and source of inspiration within these peaceful moments:

'Originally I wanted to do my neighbours a favour by damping the sound of my piano. If I want to play piano during the quiet of the night, the only respectful way is by layering thick felt in front of the strings and using very gentle fingers. It was then that I discovered that my piano sounds beautiful with the damper.'

Captivated by this sonic exposition, he placed the microphones so deep inside the piano that they were almost touching the strings. This brought a host of external sounds to the recordings which most producers would try their hardest to hide:

‘I hear myself breathing and panting, the scraping sound of the piano's action and the creaking of my wooden floorboards – all equally as loud as the music. The music becomes a contingency, a chance, an accident within all this rustling. My heart opens and I wonder what exactly it is that makes me feel so happy.'

FELT creates its own personal microcosm, offering a refuge of tender and honest beauty.

Press reactions to his last album THE BELLS:

'The Bells is a record of astonishing beauty' (8/10) – Drowned In Sound

'Nils Frahm is poised to become something of a sensation' – The Economist's Intelligent Life

‘Emotionally charged piano music which always errs toward the melodic side of melancholy' **** – Mojo

‘If there's any justice The Bells, along with his recently released Wintermusik set, will expose Frahm to a wider audience, a demographic with a seemingly insatiable appetite for more prime neo-classicism' – BBC Music

WeirdMusic.net / UKTop40Charts.com - Nils Frahm EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW:

- Do you Like/Write Weird Music ?
like the music I am doing? sure!

- When and where did your experience in music start ?
My father's record collection: he had tons of great music, music I am still listening to today. Especially all the 70's ECM stuff.

- What are you currently working on and what are your plans for the rest of the year ?
I am working on not working too much. The last 2 years have been very productive but also crazily busy and at times exhausting. So I need to watch myself but before I do that I will put my new record out and tour it quite a bit. I am also about to leave to Japan with my dear friend Peter Broderick. That is gonna be fun.

- What do you consider your greatest inspirational sources in music ?
I think music comes a lot from music. So I guess my musical all time favorites are always in my music too, but then there is also a great portion Nils magic in there, but I don't know very much about this part I suppose... also music is for me a very healthy work out. Playing the piano and playing music in general keeps me in balance.

- Best Song Ever ?

- Please describe your personal studio for us...
oooohhhh I am very much into gear from the past decades. I have a great tape machine, lots of old ribbon microphones and some condensers from the 50's. I use my piano, celeste, harmonium, roland juno synthesizer on a lot of projects, since I am doing mastering as well, I found myself spending good money on wiring and analog sound processors. I also use old spring reverbs like the akg bx 15 and the bx20. I also have a fender rhodes, a wurlitzer electric piano and a yamaha cp70 piano, a modular synthesizer and more amps than I wanna carry. Moving all that stuff to my technicians keeps me in great shape.

- Do You Like Your Voice On Your Answering Machine ?
I never was able to operate an answering machine but I hate my voice on all recordings

- What are your favorite readings ?
I like books which I wanna read more than once, because they are putting you into a certain mood I like to be in.

- Are you religious ?
I have no confessions at the moment

- If you were another person would you be friends with you?

ähhh I would hope so, but also will never find out I guess. So I try to think of something else

- What is your best physical attribute ?
When people get drunk around me they might start to tell me that my behind is pretty neat.

- Do you have a secret talent and what is it ?
I can hum without breathing longer than anyone else.

- 3 things you cannot live without ?

- Anything else ???

New album 'Felt' out on 10/10/11 via Erased Tapes.
